The term geothermal energy, which literally means 'Heat of the Earth', refers to the energy in the form of heat that is contained in the Earth's subsurface and that steadily moves toward the surface.
There are two "types" of geothermal energy that depend on the temperature involved: higher temperatures (>150°C) fall in the high enthalpy category. This is relative to the exploitation of geological anomalies or volcanoes. In this case, which occurs only in a few isolated points on the planet, it is possible to produce electric energy thanks to the high temperatures involved, as for example in Larderello, Tuscany region.
Lower temperatures are considered as low enthalpy, where the subsoil is exploited as a heat reservoir from which to extract heat during the winter season and to which transfer heat during the summer season. In this case the temperatures involved are lower, and therefore appropriate to heat or cool buildings. This is possible virtually anywhere you can access the underground.
